Card Market Rules Across Exchanges and UK Bookies

Card markets (total cards, player to be carded) appear constantly in boosts, and they hide a nasty trap: bookmakers and exchanges don’t all count cards the same way. Back “over 4.5 cards” on one counting system and lay it on another, and the same match can settle over on one site and under on the other. That’s not a matched bet; that’s two open gambles.

Here’s who counts what, and which exchange to lay each bookie on.

Maximum 2 cards per player

Under this system a player can contribute at most 2 cards (yellow + second yellow), and a straight red counts as 1 card:

Maximum 3 cards per player

Under this system a yellow followed by a second-yellow red counts as 3 total, and a straight red counts as 2 cards:

  • LiveScore Bet
  • Matchbook
  • Betdaq (specials)

Which exchange to use for which bookie

The rule is simple: lay on an exchange that counts the same way as the bookie you backed with.

  • Bet365 card boosts → lay on Smarkets or Matchbook (all max-3, straight red = 2)
  • Sky Bet / Ladbrokes / Coral / William Hill / Betfred card bets → lay on Betfair or standard Betdaq markets (all max-2, straight red = 1)

Cross the systems and a single straight red creates a one-card discrepancy between your two positions, exactly enough to lose both sides of an over/under line.

Booking points explained

Sky Bet (and some others) also run booking points markets instead of card counts: a yellow = 10 points, a straight red = 25 points (a second yellow scores as yellow + red combined). “Over 45 booking points” is not the same bet as “over 4.5 cards”, don’t lay one against the other. If you back a booking points boost, lay it on an exchange booking points market with matching scoring, or leave it alone.

General rules across all sites

A few conventions that hold everywhere, worth knowing before you place:

  • Only cards shown to players on the pitch count - managers, coaches, and benched players getting booked doesn’t count toward the market
  • 90 minutes only - cards in extra time don’t count; cards shown after the final whistle generally don’t either
  • The market settles on the referee’s official decisions - VAR-overturned cards are removed

The pre-bet checklist for card boosts

  1. Which counting system is the bookie on? (Lists above)
  2. Pick the exchange from the same column
  3. Booking points ≠ card counts, never mix them
  4. Then run the numbers through the match betting calculator (or multi-lay for multi-line card builds) as usual
