Multi-Laying: How to Lay Multiple Outcomes on the Same Event

Multi-laying is a calculation method used when you need to lay against two or more outcomes of the same event, most commonly a bet builder or boost that covers multiple correct scores. Instead of one lay bet, you place several, sized so your liability is balanced whichever outcome lands.

What is multi-laying?

A normal matched bet has one back and one lay. But some offers back a combination of outcomes: “Fulham to win 2-1 or 3-0”, for example. There’s no single exchange market for that combination, so you lay each winning scoreline separately.

The catch is the sizing. Lay both scores with equal stakes and your position is lopsided, one result profits, another loses heavily. The multi-lay calculator works out the correct lay stake for each outcome from your back bet and each outcome’s lay odds, so your total liability is spread correctly and the profit is balanced.

When to use multi-laying

  • Bet builder boosts covering multiple correct scores - the classic case (see our Bet365 bet builder boost guide)
  • “Either score” price boosts - e.g. a team to win 2-1 or 3-0
  • Multiple correct score plays built deliberately to capture boost value
  • Any promotion where more than one exact result wins your back bet

If your outcomes finish at different times (an acca across several matches), that’s a different method, see sequential laying.

Multi-lay example with a worked calculation

Bet365 boosts Fulham to win 2-1 or 3-0 to odds of 7.25. You back £50.

Two scorelines win that bet, so you lay both on the exchange:

  • Lay £35.48 on Fulham 2-1 at odds of 9.0
  • Lay £14.52 on Fulham 3-0 at odds of 22.0

Now every result is covered: if Fulham win 2-1, the back bet wins and the 2-1 lay pays out against you (netting against your boosted winnings); if it’s 3-0, same via the other lay; any other score, both lays win. The calculator sizes the two stakes so the outcome breakdown is balanced, you’re not hoping for one score over the other.

How to use the multi-lay calculator

  1. Enter your back stake and the boosted back odds
  2. Add a row for each winning outcome with its lay odds (label them “2-1”, “3-0” so you don’t mix them up)
  3. Read off the lay stake per outcome and your total liability
  4. Place each lay, then check the outcome breakdown table, every row should look acceptable before you back

The method works for three or more outcomes too, just keep adding rows. The calculator supports up to 20.

Smarkets shared liability explained

On Smarkets, laying several outcomes of the same market doesn’t stack your liability, only one scoreline can win, so Smarkets only holds the worst-case amount. The calculator has a shared liability toggle for exactly this: switch it on when laying multiple scores in one Smarkets market and it reports the real cash you need, which is usually much less than the naive sum. That makes multi-lays far more bankroll-friendly than they first appear.

Important: don’t reuse stakes if odds change

The lay stakes are calculated from the lay odds at that moment. If you set up the calculator, get distracted, and the 2-1 price has drifted from 9.0 to 10.5 by the time you place, recalculate. Laying the old stake at new odds unbalances the whole position. Enter the live odds, lay immediately, and place the back bet straight after.

Multi-laying is one of the highest-value skills in matched betting because bet builder boosts are everywhere and most bettors can’t lay them properly. Next steps: learn underlaying to squeeze more from boosts, and see the Bet365 and Bally Casino bet builder selection guides for ready-made builds.
