What are 2Ups and How Do We Profit from Them?
2Ups exploit the early payout offers run by several bookmakers, most famously Bet365. The offer: back a team to win, and if they go two goals ahead at any point, the bookie settles your bet as a winner immediately, even if the team then throws the lead away.
That clause creates one of the most profitable recurring plays in matched betting: the double win.
What are 2Ups?
A 2Up is a normal back-and-lay position placed on a match covered by an early payout offer:
- Back the team at the bookmaker
- Lay the same team at the exchange
If the team never goes two up, the bets settle against each other like any qualifying bet, a small, known loss. But if the team goes 2-0 up and then draws or loses, both sides pay: the bookie already settled your back bet as a winner, and the exchange lay wins too.
How we profit: the double win
A £10 back at odds of 5.0: the double win pays roughly £40 from the back side plus the lay side settling in your favour. From a position that cost pence to open, that’s £70+ swings on a normal stake, and 2-0 collapses happen more often than people think, especially in high-scoring leagues.
You’re taking dozens of nearly-free shots at a large payout that lands regularly enough to dominate the small costs.
Qualifying losses explained
Each 2Up that doesn’t hit costs a small qualifying loss, pennies to a pound or two depending on the odds gap. Over, say, 30 attempts you might spend £45 in qualifying losses. One double win at decent odds returns £230. That’s the whole economics of 2Ups in one line: many small tickets, occasional large prize, positive sum overall. Using underlay mode on the qualifying position squeezes the cost further when the back odds beat the lay.
Your team went 2 up - now what?
The moment your team goes two ahead, you hold a winning back bet and a live lay. Two schools of thought:
Cash out early
Lock in guaranteed profit now, whatever happens next. Two ways:
- Smarkets trade-out - use the exchange’s cash-out on your lay position
- The Early Payout Calculator - enter the live in-play odds in Advanced mode and it gives the exact second lay (or cash-out figure) that levels your profit across every remaining outcome
Common cashout methods members use
- Cash out immediately at 2-0, smallest guaranteed profit, zero stress
- Wait for the opposition to score - at 2-1 the comeback is live and the lay price moves your way; cashing out then locks in more
- Full Turnaround - hold the lay to the end, collecting the maximum only if the comeback completes
Hope they don’t win
The purist route: never cash out, ride every 2Up to full time. Maximum long-term value (you never pay the cash-out margin), but you’ll watch winning positions evaporate back to a qualifying loss when teams hold their lead. Pick the style that suits your nerves, the maths supports both.
When NOT to do a 2Up: the 2Up Rating
Not every early-payout match is worth placing. If the gap between back and lay odds is too wide, the qualifying loss eats the long-term value. The Early Payout Calculator computes a 2Up Rating from the implied odds of each position, a single percentage that tells you whether the attempt is worth the ticket price. Our Discord bot posts live 2Up alerts with the rating already checked, so members mostly just tap and place.
