Matched Betting With £100: How to Start
You can start matched betting with less, but £100 is the sweet spot. It’s enough to cover both sides of your first offers without ever feeling stuck waiting for money to settle, and it’s enough to complete the bigger welcome offers that pay £20-£30 each. Here’s exactly how the first couple of weeks look.
Why you need a bankroll at all
Matched betting is not “deposit £10, win £30”. Every offer needs money in two places at once:
- The back stake at the bookmaker (say £10)
- The lay liability at the exchange, the amount you’d pay out if the back bet wins
Lay liability is the part beginners underestimate. Laying a £10 bet at odds of 4.0 means putting roughly £30 of liability at the exchange. Your money isn’t lost, one side always comes back, plus the profit, but it’s briefly committed on both sides. A £100 bankroll keeps three or four offers moving at once instead of one.
Week one: the first offers
Day 1, open an exchange account. Smarkets is the usual first choice (low commission, clean interface). Deposit around £60 of your £100.
Day 1-2, your first sign-up offer. Pick a simple “Bet £10, get £30” style offer. Place the £10 qualifying bet at the bookie, lay it at the exchange using the match betting calculator, it tells you the exact lay stake to the penny. Your qualifying loss should be pennies, not pounds.
Day 2-3, use the free bets. Lay the free bets the same way, in “free bet (SNR)” mode on the calculator. Expect to keep 70-80% of their face value whatever the results. First profit banked: roughly £20-£24.
Rest of the week, two more welcome offers. Same routine, different bookmakers. By the end of week one, £60-£80 profit is a normal result, and the mechanics feel routine rather than nerve-racking.
Week two: momentum
With three or four bookmaker accounts open, two things happen:
- More welcome offers - there are dozens of UK bookmakers, and you’ve barely started the list.
- Reload offers begin - the bookmakers you’ve joined start sending “bet £10 get £5”, odds boosts, and event specials. This is the ongoing income stream that continues after the sign-ups run out.
This is also where alerts start to matter. Watching ten bookmaker sites for offers is a job; our Discord bot does it for you, 2up alerts, horse racing offers, and an oddsmatcher that opens the right calculator pre-filled.
Where the £100 ends up
A common misconception is that the bankroll gets spent. It doesn’t, it circulates. Money flows bookmaker → exchange → back again as bets settle, and the profit accumulates on top. After a month of steady offers, a typical picture is:
- Original bankroll: still £100, now spread across accounts
- Profit banked: £100-£300 in month one from welcome offers alone
From there, members who keep going typically reach £500-£1,000+ a month by month two or three, reinvesting a little of the profit to run bigger offers comfortably.
Three rules for a £100 start
- Never skip the calculator. Guessing lay stakes is how beginners lose money. Every offer, every time, the calculators are free.
- One offer at a time until it’s boring. Speed comes with repetition; mistakes come from rushing.
- Track everything. A simple spreadsheet of deposits, withdrawals and profit keeps you honest and shows the compounding.
