Placing the Qualifying Bet and Using the Free Bet
This is the hands-on walkthrough of a complete sign-up offer: placing the qualifying bet, then converting the free bet into locked-in profit. Real numbers throughout, using a Skybet offer as the example.
First: read the sign-up terms
Always read the offer terms before depositing. The three catches that void bonuses most often:
- Promo codes - some offers require a code at registration; miss it and no bonus
- Payment method exclusions - several bookmakers exclude deposits from digital banks like Revolut (and most exclude e-wallets); use a standard debit card
- Excluded bet types - qualifying bets often can’t be placed on price boosts, and usually carry minimum odds
Thirty seconds of reading protects the whole offer.
Placing the qualifying bet
The example offer: Skybet, place a £5 qualifying bet.
The goal is a close match, back odds and lay odds as near to each other as possible, because the gap is your qualifying loss:
Backing Argy Bhaji at 2.63 (Skybet) with lay odds 2.8 (Smarkets) loses about 30p. Backing a horse at 2.2 / 3.0 would lose £1.34 - over four times as much, same £5 stake.
That’s the entire skill of qualifying bets: pick close odds, keep the loss to pennies. Members skip the searching, the bot’s oddsmatcher surfaces the closest matches on demand.
Laying on Smarkets
- Search the horse’s name on Smarkets
- Open the match betting calculator in standard mode (qualifying = your own money, minimise loss)
- Enter back stake £5, back odds 2.63, lay odds 2.8 → lay stake £4.78
- Place the lay at the exchange first, then the back bet at Skybet
Waiting for the qualifying bet to settle
After the race, one side wins and the other loses, by design, nearly a wash. The bookmaker then credits your free bets: sometimes instantly on settlement, sometimes within 24 hours (the terms say which). Nothing to do but wait; don’t place anything else against the offer meanwhile.
Using the free bet
The profitable half. One crucial mechanic first:
Why the stake isn’t returned: on most bookmakers, free bets are stake not returned (SNR), win a £10 free bet at 6.5 and you receive the winnings only (£55), not the £10 stake back. This changes the maths, which is why the calculator has a dedicated free-bet mode. Never lay a free bet with standard-mode numbers.
Working out the lay
Free-bet strategy: back at high odds (5.0+), because SNR maths keeps more value there.
£10 free bet on the draw at 6.5 (bookie), lay odds 7.2 (Smarkets). Calculator in free bet (SNR) mode → lay £7.43. Result: £7.45 profit if the draw lands, £7.43 if it doesn’t.
Locked in either way, about 74% of the free bet’s face value banked. Repeat across every sign-up offer on the list, and this pair of skills, pennies-cheap qualifiers, high-odds SNR conversions, is the foundation everything else builds on (boosts, 2Ups, builders).
