What Are Sign-Up Offers?

Sign-up offers, also called welcome offers, are the promotions bookmakers use to win new customers: “Bet £10, get £30 in free bets”, “Deposit £10, get £40 in bonuses”. For a normal punter they’re a nudge to start gambling. For a matched bettor, they’re the most reliable money in the whole game: each one converts into £10-£40 of guaranteed profit, and there are dozens of them.

How do we profit from them?

Matched betting removes the gambling from the promotion. Every offer breaks into two parts, each covered by a lay bet at the exchange so that no result can hurt you. The bonus the bookmaker hands over is the profit; everything else nets out to roughly zero. (Full mechanics here.)

Part one: the qualifying bet

The qualifying bet is the bet the offer requires you to place with your own money to unlock the bonus. You back at the bookmaker and lay the same outcome at the exchange, sized with the calculator so the two cancel out.

The qualifying bet isn’t meant to make money, expect a small, known loss of pence up to about £1 (the gap between back and lay odds plus commission). That’s the ticket price for the bonus, and picking close odds keeps it tiny. The step-by-step walkthrough shows a real example placed end to end.

Part two: the free bet

Once the qualifying bet settles, the bookmaker credits your free bets. Now the profitable half: back with the free bet at the bookmaker, lay it at the exchange, calculator in free-bet (SNR) mode, since most free bets don’t return the stake.

Because the stake wasn’t your money, both outcomes are pure profit: typically 70-80% of the free bet’s face value, guaranteed whichever way the match goes. A £30 free bet banks £21-£24. Minus the pennies of qualifying loss, that’s the offer’s profit, locked in, not hoped for.

Why sign-ups are the most profitable stage

Three reasons sign-ups beat everything that comes after:

  1. The bonuses are biggest - bookmakers pay most to acquire customers; reload offers for existing customers are smaller
  2. They’re guaranteed available - no waiting for a boost to appear; the offer sits there until you take it
  3. They stack - there are dozens of UK bookmakers. At £10-£40 each, the sign-up list alone is worth several hundred pounds, which is exactly why beginners’ first month typically lands at £100-£300

When the sign-up list runs dry, the game shifts to price boosts and reload offers, smaller per offer, but endless. Sign-ups are the launchpad; work through them deliberately, one at a time, terms read, calculator open.
